“Each thing has its word, but the word has become a thing by itself. Why shouldn't I find it? Why can't a tree be called Pluplusch, and Pluplubasch when it has been raining?” -Hugo Ball

Typography

During this project we’ll learn how text interacts with images, how text can be used to create images, and how text itself can be art. We will explore how text is used to convey ideas visually and through the meaning of the text itself, looking at typography from many different cultures. We’ll create an image using only text, studying how meaning is conveyed through font. Then we will use photography to find letters within the school environment. Next, we’ll create an ornate letter design. We’ll create stencils, talking about positive and negative space, using spray paint to “write” a poem using all students’ letters. Next, we will use wool and cardboard to create a block for printing, making a series of prints that explore colour principles and layering. Finally, we’ll refine our letter designs, carving the designs into linoleum blocks to create linocut prints.

Grade 7 Trip to Moganshan Art Galleries

Patterns: Art + Mathematics

In this unit, we will use a range of mathematical pattern construction techniques to build large-scale patterns as a group.  We’ll look at how mathematics and art relate and how mathematical concepts like symmetry, repetition, and tessellation have been used throughout art history and relate it to our own work. We’ll also explore colour blending with chalk pastels and colour pencils to add depth and detail to our designs.

Transfigure Transform Transmogrify

In this unit, we will carry out a series of observational drawings of man-made objects including blind contour, contour, curvatures, cross-hatching, pointillism and smooth shading.  We will discuss and research the work of Alexander Calder.  We’ll work from our drawings of realistic objects, manipulating the planes and lines to create abstract drawings and plans for a 3D sculpture. Finally, we’ll use wire and papier-mâché and paint to construct a 3D abstract sculpture.

Endangered Animal Prints

This unit we'll be researching endangered animals and creating designs based off the lines, shapes, and colours we find in their images. Building on  previous knowledge, we'll create simplified positive and negative space designs based on our animal. We will have our first introduction to the art of Printmaking, and we'll learn about layers in artworks and create a final piece based off Andy Warhol's Endangered Species print series.
