Barbizon to Impressionism
November 22, 2014
6 teachers and 64 art students from Grade 9, 11, & 12 went to see 73 works touring to the Shanghai Museum from Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Massachusetts. Students had the rare opportunity to see key pieces by artists such as Jean Léone Gérôme, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Pierre Bonnard, Claude Monet and many other famous artworks from the Barbizon and Impressionist Schools of painting.
Students studied the artworks carefully by drawing them in their Investigation Workbooks. To learn how the impressionists used colours, back in the classroom students studied sections of the paintings in detail before applying what they learned to their own work. Several students agreed that seeing the artwork in real life was more vivid and intersesting than looking in a book. One student said it was as if she could feel the presence of the painting, and and that was something she could never have known about from a book.
