CIE IGCSE Art & Design Assessment Objectives

A01 Gather
Investigate and research a variety of appropriate sources
  • Have you taken a range of your own photographs?
  • Have you been to a gallery and there is evidence of this in your workbook?
  • Have you collect some APPROPRIATE secondary sources (images from the internet / magazines) that help you identify what you are trying to express through your own work?
  • Have you researched artists on gallery websites and in books?
  • Other sources could be maps, poetry, films, people, interviews, biographies and more…
Record and analyse information from direct observation and/or other sources and personal experience.
  • Have you recorded what you see from looking? (observational drawing)
  • Have you written down or drawn, what you feel, think, remember, experienced?
  • Have you analysed the artwork of others? This means have you described it, explained it, identified and described the elements of art and the principles of design? Have you written about how this connects to your own work?
  • Have you reflected on and thought deeply about your own experiences, your own drawings?
A02 Develop
Explore a range of visual and/or other ideas by manipulating images.
Show development of ideas appropriate processes.
  • Have you done a mind-map on the theme?
  • Have you done mini-sketches, thumb nail sketches of ideas for your own artwork?
  • Have you done more research, experiments to develop your own ideas?
  • Have you written down and explained what you are trying to communicate through your artwork? What is the big idea behind your artwork?
  • Have you tried out your idea in different compositional arrangements?
  • Have you tried out your idea in different media or different processes?
  • Have you manipulated images?
A03 Organise
Organise and use the visual and/to other forms effectively to express ideas.
Make informed aesthetic judgments by recognizing the effect of relationships between visual and/or other forms.
  • How have you organized the elements of your artwork (composition) to express the ideas that you want to?
  • Have you chosen the best Elements of Art and Principles of Design to express your ideas or feelings?
  • Have you selected the best media, or process to express your idea.
  • Does the your final artwork express what you intended?
  • In your workbook, is it easy read? Have you added sub-headings, have you selected colours, arrangements in your book help to express what you are researching, ideas
A04 Experiment
Show exploration and experimentation with appropriate materials
  • Are the media you have chosen appropriate to the ideas you’re trying to express?
  • Have you explored many different kinds of media (breadth)
  • Have you explored each of the media in many ways to really understand its qualities and what you can do with it (depth)?
Select and control appropriate media and processes, demonstrating practical, technical and expressive skills and intentions.
  • Have you gained some mastery of the media? How well do you use the materials?
  • Have you improved your technical skills?
  • Have you done media studies to understand the quality of a media?
A05 Personalise
Show personal vision and commitment through an interpretative and creative response.
  • Have you shown ENTHUSIASM about your topic?
  • Does your work tell the story of your ideas and artwork?
  • Have you sustained your investigation from start to finish?
  • Have you explored most if not all of the possibilities for your ideas?
Present an informed response through personal evaluation, reflection and critical thinking.
  • Does the work you did on your boards inform your final artworks?
  • Have you shown your learning journey?
  • Have you gone beyond CLICHÉ?
